Brahma Muhurta.

There is a popular proverb in English: ‘Early to bed, early to rise; makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.’ This proverb has two pieces of advice and three expected fruition if you follow the advice.

The two pieces of advice are: i) early to bed and ii) early to rise; the three fruition are: i) healthy, ii) wealthy, and iii) wise. So, according to this universally accredited saying one can achieve the dream goals of life by simply sleeping early, and waking up early morning.

The topic of this post is to discuss the best time to wake up or leave the bed in the morning. In the Hindu way of living, there is a time segment assigned to wake up and do certain activities. This time segment is called ‘Brahma Muhurta. Muhurtas are the matrices of time in the Hindu calendar. The time is counted from one Sunrise to the next Sunrise. This duration of time is calibrated into five matrices:

1)    Lipta: approximately equal to 0.4 seconds,

2)    Vighati: approximately equal to 24 seconds,

3)    Ghatika: approximately equal to 24 minutes

4)    Muhurta: approximately equal to 48 minutes, and

5)    Nakshatra Ahoratra: equal to 30 muhurtas, i.e., (48 minutes × 30) =144o minutes ÷ 60 minutes = 24 hours or one day.  So, one muhurta is 1/30 portion of the day. In other words, there are 48 muhurtas in a day. They are  tabulated below: –

The Brahma Muhurta begins 1 hour, 36 minutes or 96 minutes before the sunrise. For example, if the sunrise time is 06:00, then the Muhurta begins at 04: 24 and ends at 05:12. So the Muhurta ending time is 05:12 (highlighted in red color in above column).

The significance of this Muhurta: – The name of this Muhurta is Brahma Muhurta. In Hinduism, the three cosmic functions, namely, the creation, the preservation or maintenance, and the destruction are performed by the Triad of Brahma, Bishnu, and Maheswar respectively. So, Brahma (the macrocosm) is the creator of the universe (the cosmos).

Hence, this Muhurta (48 minutes) is the muhurta of ‘creation’. According to Ayurveda, this time is the best time for Yoga practice and Meditation.  Rishi Shushrut defined this Muhurta as Amrit Muhurta. Amrit means Nectar. So, this is the time to create you by yourself; this is the time to wean on the Amrit! Amrit (Nectar)!! What is Amrit…? Where is Amrit? Amrit is within us; Amrit is around us: in the environment, atmosphere, and in our thought…

During the Brahma Muhurta, the atmosphere is serene and pure. It is free from pollutant element: noise and commotion, devoid of smokes, pollutant, and harmful gases.  It is refreshed with the gentle air blown from the North to South. The Ozone layer which absorbs about 98% of the Ultra Violet (UV) rays while radiating from the Sun to the earth is at its optimum level during the Brahma Muhurta. The swaying of leaves in the rhythm of gentle moving air and the dawn chorus that comes from the lush green vegetation fill the mind with sated pleasure.

The mind is free from agitation, anger, and instability. The natural atmosphere of the nectar muhurta soothes away all evil feelings. There is the preponderance of the purity (Sattva) and equanimity in the mind and atmosphere; the mind is infused with divine thought.  So, Brahma Muhurta is believed to be the most favorable for acquiring any kinds of Gyana (knowledge). Rishis referred this Muhurta as the Muhurta of Brahma Gyan (Divine knowledge) and the muhurta to realize the verity of life.

During this period the retentive power of our memory is at the highest. So, students or learners should avail themselves this period of time for their learning purposes. It is also learned that this period of time is the time when natural production of melatonin (a hormone that causes changes in our skin color) and secretion of the pineal (a small organ in the brain that releases hormone) gland function in their most natural way.

So, the ones who wake up in the Brahma Muhurta are healthy and wise. They are also wealthy. Because, they possess better health, sound mind, and cool temperament. They are not in hurry and tension.  Time never runs out for them. They work with planning and can finish the work in quicker pace compared to other. So, they are wealthy. They are happy as well because they are successful. They can manage time for their family and society.
