Naming a new born baby is a part of the sixteenth sacraments of the Hindu culture. Usually, a full name contains three parts: first name, middle name and surname. The middle name is always the father’s name among some linguistic communities of India, e.g. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (full name of the father of India, Mahatma Gandhi).
The first name is own name; the middle name is his father’s name and last name or the surname is the family name. But for many other communities, the middle name is not the father’s name, e.g. Ananda Ram Barooah, Hem Chandra Goswami etc. Nowadays, a trend of only writing (using) the initial alphabet for the middle name is in currency, e.g. Yuddha B. Chhetri, for Yuddha Bijoy/Bir Chhetri. Many times, the first and the surname make the full name, e.g. Sunil Chhetri, Baichung Bhutia, Siv Thapa, Durga Malla etc.
Generally, a name bears the religious-cultural and linguistic identity of the person. But, a new trend of naming is growing popular among new-gen parents. The name is decided for a baby before he/she is born and; often these names are named after icons/Celebes of different fields (mostly artists & sports personalities).
But, according to the religious-cultural tradition of Hinduism, there is a prescribed procedure of naming. The basis of this naming methodology is based on the longitude of the Moon, in other words, the zodiac sign in which the Moon is located at the moment of birth, secondly, the nakshatra (asterism of the moon) that the Moon takes on and thirdly the Pada (quarter) of the moon.
A Nakshatra is consists of 13°- 20´ which is divided into four equal parts. These four parts are called Padas (quarters). Each of the Padas is 3°-20´ (13°-20´÷4= 3°-20´) which is lined with an especial accent of sound/voice. There are 27 nakshatras in the zodiac (27X13°-20´=360°) and 108 (27X4=108) padas. Therefore, each pada of a nakshatra suggests the first alphabet of the first name of the newborn baby. Then, the first name is given on the basis of this particular accent of sound and religious-cultural tradition and of course according to our choice.
The first alphabets as prescribed by a nakshatra and its pada (quarter) is tabulated below so that readers may name their babies of their own:-
