Yogas in Vedic Astrology.

The principle of Yoga is a unique component of the Vedic astrology. Yoga is a Sanskrit term which means “Addition, Combination or Union.” Therefore, according to me, Yoga refers to a special relationship or association of a planet or planets with another planet or other planets by their placement in relation to signs, houses, and Nakshatras and aspects. These Yogas are also called Raj Yogas. They play key role in predictive astrology.

There are hundreds of Parashara Yogas in Vedic astrology including auspicious and inauspicious Yogas. The planet or planets taking part in the formation #Rajyoga is/are called Rajyoga karak planet/planets. These # Rajyoga Karaka planets give results during their ruling period, i.e., during the period of their Mahadasha(M.D) or/ and Antardasha (A.D)

In this blog I shall discuss few important Rajyogas; but, before I proceed to that it is imperative to clarify the concept of yog karaka planet (not Rajyog karaka). Yoga karaka planets are powerful and always give auspicious results but they are not as powerful as that of Raj yog Karaka. I explain this point: the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses from the ascendant are called ‘Quadrant’ and the 1st, 5th and 9th houses the ‘Trines’. Here the point worth underlining is that the ‘1st house’ which is also the ascendant is bestowed with the virtues of the Quadrant and Trine; therefore, the 1st house is both, the Quadrant and Trine.

The 1st house is the pivot point of the horoscope and considered as the most powerful and auspicious house. The 7th house is stronger than the 4th house and 10th house is stronger than the 7th house among the quadrants. Between the trine houses the 9th house is stronger than the 5th house.
Yog Karak by placement of planets: – When the lord (planet) of any of the Quadrant (Kendra) houses (1st/4th/7th/10th) occupies any of the Trine Trikon) houses, then that planet attains the Yoga Karaka quality; in the same way, when the lord (planet) of any of the Trine houses occupies any one of the Quadrant (Kendra) houses, then that planet also acquires the quality of a Yoga karak (planet).

Let us understand this point with the help of examples: suppose, Ascendant or the 1st house is Leo; the lord of the Leo is the Sun. Now if the Sun sits in Sagittarius, a Trine 5th house from the Leo ascendant), then the Sun acquires the quality of Yog Karak planet. If the order is reversed, and Jupiter, the lord of the 5th house sits in Leo, then the Jupiter attains the Yog Karak position. Jupiter can become even if he sits in any of the other two quadrant (Kendra) houses, i.e., Scorpio, the 4th house or in Taurus, the 10th house. 2nd example: suppose, Ascendant or 1st house is Aries; Aries’ lord is Mars.

This Mars becomes Yog Karak if it sits in any of the 1st/4th/7th/10th house. He can also become yog Karak if he sits in the 5th/ 9th house; because, the 1st house is aquadrant (Kendra) as well as Trine (Trikon). For Aries ascendant, the Cancer sign is the 4th house (quadrant) and Cancer is ruled by Moon. Now, the Moon becomes the Yoga karak planet for Aries ascendant if she sits in either 5th house (Leo) or in the 9th house (Sagittarius).

Yog Karak by Exchange of placement: – The lords of the Quadrants (Kendras) and Trines (Trikon) can become Rajyog karak by exchanging their lordship houses: if the lord of the 9th house sits in the 10th house and the lord of the 10th house sits in the 9th house then both the planets (lords of 9th and 10th houses) become very powerful Rajyog Karak.

For example, for Sagittarius Ascendant, Aries is the 5th house and Virgo is the 10th house. Mars and Mercury are the lords of the 5th and 10th house respectively. In this case, if Mars sits in the 10th house and Mercury in the 5th house then both of these planets become powerful Rajyog Karak. Exchange of Nakshtra also can for this Rajyog. The Rajyog karak planets bestow their auspicious results to the native during their Mahadasha and Antardasha Period.

Yoga Karaka by conjunction of planets: – By conjunction also the lords of the Quadrants (Kendra) and Trine (Trikon) houses become Rajyog Karak; but to get the best results, such conjunctions have fulfill two conditions:
1) the conjunction must take place in either Quadrant (Kendra) or Trine (trikon) houses i.e., in 1st/4th/5th/7th/9th/10th house;
2) the degree difference between these two planets should not be more than about 4 degree. The degree difference is more than 4 degree is also able to give Rajyog Karak results but their result giving capacity will be weaker.

Yog karak by Aspects: – The lords of Quadrants/Quadrant and Trines/Trine houses become Rajyog Karak if they aspect one another. For example, for Aries Ascendant (Lagna), the 4th house is Cancer and its lord is Moon; the 9th house is Sagittarius and its lord is Jupiter. Now, if Moon and Jupiter aspect each other then they Moon & Jupiter) become the Rajyog Karak. But it is desirable that they are placed in Kendra/Trikon or 11th house from the ascendant.
According to some renowned Indian astrologers the relationship between the Lagna Lord and the 5th house Lord by means of house exchange or conjunction or mutual aspects forms the most powerful and auspicious Rajyog.
